High rents leave tenants depressed
  4/10/2007

ABC News

A national survey of tenants has revealed the majority of people feel anxious, depressed and helpless about the rental situation across the country.

The findings come on the back of the latest Australian Property Monitors report which has measured large rent increases in most capital cities.

The online survey shows almost 90 per cent of respondents said the difficult rental climate had a negative psychological impact.

Shaun Di Gregorio, the general manager of the real estate company which conducted the survey, says two-thirds were dissuaded from applying for properties because of the large number of people seeking accommodation.

"So number one, they are getting depressed at the idea of having to compete," he said.

"We found one in five is experiencing rage as a result and one of the most startling things to come out of the survey, is one-third of the people we surveyed have given up on the idea of ever owning a place."
